Hell for the Company has been released on audio and the lovely Ivana has agreed to join us to answer a few questions.
First off, what did you think of Vance and the voice he gave you? How about the other characters of your story?
Oh, honey, Vance is fabulous! Have you heard his voice? To die for. I think he really got me. Just the right amount of bitchy at just the right times. I can’t think of anyone he didn’t hit pitch perfect. Not that Benny appreciates it. He doesn’t think he sounds like that. Delusional, I tell you.
You seem to quite like Shax, what is it about him that you decided he could be the captain of the Brimstone? Is there a particular reason you allowed Shax and Verin to stay on the ship all those years ago?
What’s not to like? Captain Cute Buns is a sexy little beast. And really, between you and me, hon, for all his faults, he’s a polite little demon and my life’s been so much more fun since he came onboard. I only let Verin grouchy-pants stay because of Shax. At first. But the boy can fly. I decided to keep him, too.
The Brimstone crew seem like a family, what would you say is your role in this family?
Me? I’m the ultra-fabulous fairy godmother, of course. I make the impossible happen whenever I can and keep these bad boys in line. Someone has to look out for them.
Any secrets of your Brimstone family you’d like to share? Such as the best or worst characteristics that endear them to you, or just drive you crazy?
They’ll deny it, but between you and me? Both our demon boys snore like jackhammers. Shakes my deck plates sometimes it’s so loud. Also, it would be nice if Verin would say please and thank you every once in a while. Wouldn’t kill him to be polite, right? On second thought, maybe it would.
Overall, what were your impressions of having this story told again in audio? Do you think this will bring new fans, and can the ship manage Shax if there are even more people admiring him?!?
I love being read to. It was just wonderful! And while I hope more people get to hear the story, If our handsome captain’s head gets any bigger, we’ll have to widen the corridors.
Anything else you’d like the blog reading public to know about you or the ship? (Shax may say he is captain, Verin may say he is the pilot, but really, we know it is Ivana who runs the operation!)
Oh, you! You’re making me blush! But that’s a good thing to keep in mind. AI and ship are a symbiotic relationship. I can’t exist without the Brimstone and she can’t run without me. We’re comfy that way.
Any idea what may be next for the crew of the Brimstone – new stories or new audio? And what direction would you like the story to go if there are new stories to come?
A little birdie told me there might be more audio coming up, and the newest story did just come out in the Travels Through the Scarlet Equinox anthology. Scarlet. I do like that color. If there are any new stories, I’m hoping there’s more Julian. He’s so adorably hot.
Thanks for your time Ivana, I always enjoy hearing what you have to say on the adventures you seem to have had since encountering Shax and Verin!
Shax, the Demon Prince of Thieves, has reconciled himself to exile. He has a grand time careening around the galaxy as a high-end, intergalactic purloiner of pretties. Everything’s going just fine, thank you very much. All right, fine, the anti-gravity cows are a bit problematic and some of his buyers are bad for his health, but he manages until he comes across an injured angel in a psychedelic alien jungle.
He only rescues the wing boy for his golden feathers, but what Shax doesn’t know about angels could fill an intergalactic encyclopedia.

Review by Sandra: This was a fun and sweet little short, and I especially think it was a nice and easy ‘read’ in audio format. I do think that it could have had a little more depth to it. Shaw immediately feelssomething when he find the injured Angel, even though he can’t describe it or explain it. So it’s a bit insta-lovey. He does end up making a lot of sweet observations about Ness and I do believe those feelings, I just wish they would have stayed away from some of the unexplained emotions because it can feel shallow at times.
The story isn’t really long enough for us to get too invested, but like I said it’s light and fun. The anti-gravity cows were hilarious and I loved the way they were described and Shax’s affection for them, the ships computer was also an addition that added more to the story. Not only was she funny but I liked seeing Shax charm her and their playful banter. Because it is short we get a few chapters with Shax and his partner for some decent world building and character development, but then most of the rest of the story focuses on Shax and Ness together which balanced out well.
I mentioned world building, and it was pretty good for this length of a story. I certainly don’t understand everything about this world, I’m not even entirely sure if humans know about Angels and Demons. But it’s not necessary and I don’t really care. The whole Angel/Demon thing is really just a mechanism for our MC’s to be archenemies, otherwise they could have been any old space pokes.
Vance Bastian did an alright job with the narration. At the time I remember thinking there was something I didn’t love about the tone(?) he was using, but honestly now as I think back I just remember a pleasant audiobook. I’m sure this would be a lovely read as well, but if you’re an audiobook fan that it’s a good option for this short story.
I loved Gravitational Attraction
