Jake’s friendship is the most important thing in the world to Dylan, so as much as it hurts to see him with other people, Dylan keeps his mouth shut about his true feelings. When Jake wins a cruise to Alaska, he asks Dylan to go along, but what Dylan doesn’t know, is that there’s more on offer than a dream vacation.
Can Dylan and Jake sail off to their happily ever after, or are they cruising toward disaster?
Review: This is a friends to lovers story that focuses on the lack of communication between the two MC, Jake and Dylan. The story is told in alternating first person by these long-time friends. Jake has just won a free cruise to Alaska, something he knows Dylan has always wanted to do, so he convinces Dylan to take some short-notice time off work to go with him. Since Dylan has been secrete in love with Jake forever, of course he does whatever Jake wishes.
What Jake wishes is to finally admit to Dylan that he has more-than-friends feelings for him but he’s been too nervous to tell him. So begins the give and take of two sort of clueless guys who don’t know how to make that move without ruining what they have. They were cute together and I could sort of understand the reluctance to move forward. I do admit sometimes I wanted to shake both of them. “Momentarily, I contemplated hijacking one of the lifeboats and rowing myself to one of the uninhabited islands off the coast of British Columbia.” This, rather than than face Jake after a drunken night.
For his part, Jake wants nothing more than to convince Dylan to give them a romantic chance. Except despite all his plans, he sort of messes it up. “Instead, I’d gotten us both wasted, serenaded him with a pop-punk ballad from 2003, then had messy drunken sex with him in every position I could manage. Not exactly a sweeping declaration of love.”
But they try to get their act together and take us along for the ride.
