Rating: ★★★★½

Love is a high-stakes game.

A century and a half ago, Ante Novak died on a Croatian battlefield—and rose three days later as a vampire. Now he haunts Las Vegas, stealing blood and money from drunken gamblers and staying on the fringe of the powerful vampire organization known as the Shadows. His existence feels empty and meaningless until he meets beautiful Peter Gehrardi, who can influence others with his thoughts.

An attraction flares instantly, bringing a semblance of life to Ante’s dead heart. But the Shadows want Peter too, and they’re willing to kill to get him. As Ante and Peter flee, they learn more about themselves and each other, and they discover that the world is a stranger place than either of them imagined. With enemies at their heels and old mistakes coming back to exact a price, how can Ante and Peter find sanctuary?

I can honestly say I really enjoyed this story. The writing was tight, the action fast paced, the characters relatable (well, paranormal qualities aside), and the ending sweet. Ante is an unusual vampire in that he doesn’t go for wealth or material things. He lives his life one night at a time, with one change of clothes and food on the hoof, so to speak. He hunts humans at casinos in Vegas, waiting until they are really drunk and have some money in their pockets. From there he’ll befriend them and once in their room, partake in his dinner and relieve them of their cash. Lucky for him the victims are too drunk to remember quite what happened, so he figures they’ll recall amazing sex and losing all their money gambling.

Peter too, preys on the people in casinos… only his approach is a bit different. He’s not a vampire, but is always well dressed and has money. Peter is able to convince people to “give” him things. Little does Peter realize he’s not quite human.

When Ante comes across Peter he decides he needs to encourage Peter to go somewhere else so that Ante’s hunting grounds are left alone. He approaches Peter and after tasting the “human’s” blood discovers, he’s not quite human after all. The only problem in this whole thing is the Shadows. They are like a vampire mob who run Sin City. They want Peter for his talent and send Ante to fetch him.

What ensues is a chase and evasion of the pair from the Shadows. A couple of other interesting paranormal characters who cross their path add to the story.

I highly recommend this one if you like paranormal, sexy characters, quirky characters, adventure, and happy endings.
