Review: Laura Baumbach – Magical Rescue (Shifting Through the Snow #8)

Author: Laura Baumbach

Genre: Mm Holiday

Rating: ★★½☆☆

Summary: Christmas is only a few days away. New Year’s Eve, with all its terminal finality, would, thankfully, bring an end to Daniel Sherman’s traumatic, pain-filled, empty year. Its seem like an appropriate time to bring everything in his world to a close. Spirit broken, Daniel’s plan is to enjoy maybe his last holiday in the icy cold of his beloved wilderness. It would be a comfort to end his days wrapped in the peace and solitude of the mountain — If only he didn’t feel like he was being watched, a feeling he’d had since his accident. Maybe adventure wasn’t out of his life yet.

Review: This is apparently part of a series tied together loosely, so I didn’t feel like I was missing anything that way. That being said, this probably would have worked better for me had it been longer. I needed more – more backstory on Daniel, more information on Neil, the whole thing. The blurb caught me up, but I didn’t get enough of Daniel’s “traumatic, pain-filled empty year” for things to make sense.

Daniel was a rock climber who had a bad fall a year ago and damaged his leg and hip. He’s gone to his cabin in the mountains to maybe end it. He has an awesome cousin in Kyla, who wants him to be there for her wedding. He’s sort of made up his mind he’s not going there or anywhere else. A random stop in by a friend of Kayla’s changes things.

I don’t want to say too much because, spoilers, but you sort of see where it’s going except then it takes a turn. I had questions about the doctor and a ton about who Neil and Daniel actually are, which was given pretty quickly.

There were a few editing errors, (taunt instead of taut happened a few times) but nothing that would drag you out of the story. This is an author I enjoy reading, so I guess I just needed more depth and more detail.
