Summary: When a pair of armed lowlifes and a snowstorm in the Sandia Mountains strand photojournalist Gavin Leeds in Mike Ivanov’s cabin, the newshound gets the shock of his life. Not only is his sexy rescuer an Alpha bear shifter, but Mike also believes that Gavin is his destined heart’s mate. Some hot and dirty sex with a hunky shifter is one thing, but Gavin doesn’t believe in fated mates or happily ever afters.
Mike Ivanov has enough problems with his pack as it is; they’re not thrilled that he won’t be siring the next Alpha, and now he has to answer a challenge from one of his pack members. Having his heart’s mate show up on the same night doesn’t help. Finding out that his mate is a snarky, rebellious human with a commitment problem and an ass he wants to bite?
Nobody ever said an Alpha’s life was going to be easy.
Review: I didn’t go into this book expecting too much, the cover and title give the impression of a typical shifter book with some cheesy insta-love made up for by steamy animalistic sex. I was pretty spot on… expect for the hot sex.
The plot of a prostitution ring is really only there as an excuse to get Gavin into the woods in the middle of winter, and then it pops up again at the end for resolution and to introduce us to our characters for the next book. I would have just as soon left it out entirely because it didn’t serve much of a purpose. Instead, I would have preferred the drama come from Mike’s pack, since they were referenced as having concerns with him not siring the next Alpha. That was all brushed over in the end with an “I’ll win them over” from Gavin.
I knew going in that this was a ‘mates’ shifter book, so insta-love was expected, but I still need to feel some connection. Gavin found Mike attractive but was upfront about not wanting a serious relationship… again, there was no need for this added character ‘depth’ since he changed his mind a few hours later. I can do insta, but even I have trouble with the L-bomb being dropped within 2 days of knowing each other.
But as I mentioned, I can forgive this when it’s balance out by smoking hot animalistic mate-sex… unfortunately, I don’t actually remember the sex scene. Shifters has always been a favorite genre of mine, but recently I’ve found it harder and harder to find in depth character development and a solid plot in this genre.
I did read the first chapter for the next book, and am a little intrigued. It’s MF and I’m considering giving this author another go, there seems to be a little more depth/history with the female lead, hopefully the author will give it the attention in deserves.
Side note pet peeve for whoever decides on covers: If the book is about a Bear shifter, don’t have cover models with waxed chests!!!!
