Summary: Noel is a lonely librarian who spends most of his time working, surfing dating websites to no avail, and hanging out with the cat who shows up on his balcony every night. When he meets Mike, he’s finally found a man who holds his interest. But it soon becomes clear that there’s more to the bird-chasing businessman than what’s on the surface.
Review: Noel is a librarian who is lonely. He has friends but they don’t share the same schedules and his checking dating sites isn’t panning out at all. When a stray cat shows up at his door, looking for food and some petting (but only til midnight and then kitty has to flee), he finds someone (something?) he can talk to.
Noel bonds with his new friend, Buddy the Cat, even as he acts like a shy teenager in front of the guy he thinks is cute, Mike. “It’s …okay to meet you.” I liked that, because it fit with Noel’s personality, shy and a little bit awkward.
Perhaps due to the short length of this story I didn’t see any connection between Mike and Noel. Noel and Buddy, sure. Noel is a lonely guy who pours his heart out to the stray cat who turns up. Mike is a little strange and Noel overlooks that a lot.
To be fair, part of my problem was the writing, which felt simplistic, or maybe a little immature. There were times I couldn’t imagine an adult speaking that way, sometimes I felt I was being talked at.
If you are a dedicated cat fancier, this might work for you.
