Idrys Barber is a lonely, closeted man, whose life is completely ordered and controlled by his parents, until his sister files a complaint with the DA. Add to that, Reilly Lucas invades the dreams that plague him, along with Hadrian Merkel. Hadrian and Reilly meet over a pair of Boston Terrier puppies and a black kitten, dating each other and now they want to include Idrys, but will they convince him it’s not a crime to be together with them, or will Idrys’ father destroy any chance they have for a good life together?
The title of this book is very well chosen, Idyrs is definitely in need of healing. He is an animal control officer and as such comes to the no-kill shelter that Hadrian works at as a vet tech regularly. Hadrian is a flirt but even though he has wanted to get closer to Idrys for years, Idrys is very obviously uncomfortable about his sexuality and so Hadrian leaves it at friendship.
Reilly Lucas is getting over a bad relationship and has decided to finally give in to his long held dream of having dogs. He works shifts and decides it’s better to have at least two.
He finds not only two cute puppies with a very attached kitten in need of a home; he also finds Hadrian. Reilly and Hadrian start a relationship, but within a very short amount of time things in Idrys’s life take a drastic turn. Both Reilly and Hadrian find Idrys very attractive and he is also attracted to them, but afraid of what that means for him.
Idrys has been abused, brainwashed, physically and mentally mistreated, stalked and is under constant surveillance by his parents. I would like to believe that this was all over the top and doesn’t really happen, but I’m actually pretty sure such things occur, so I went with it.
His parents beat him while quoting bible verses of the evils of homosexuality to him at 15 and had him sexually assaulted in college. They still monitor his phone, his banking and Internet usage, even though he is an adult and has a successful career but due to their treatment of him over years he doesn’t even know how to attempt an escape from their clutches.
As I mentioned things take a drastic turn, but it allows him to start freeing himself and seek treatment. Idrys has a lot of baggage and it’s not glossed over, no magical healing dicks, he needs therapy and he knows it. It takes time, this isn’t like the usual ménage stories I read, no sex fest here, there are some sexual scenes but few and far between. All three get a POV, but Reilly and Idrys have such sad backstories, hard to read at times, I liked that Hadrian was so shocked at how they were treated by their parents he actually sent two gift baskets to his parents as a thank you.
While there was a love story and a romantic relationship is formed between the three men, I found it to be more of a healing and moving forward for Idrys from a dark place with the support and understanding of his men and therapists. If you are looking for a big hurt-comfort story with three really nice guys, a few furbabies, evil families causing drama and then getting their due, and a very hopeful happy ending, this might be the one to get.
